Another hotly contested wedding related activity is the money dance. Brides are always wondering if it is “appropriate” to have a money dance. My take is that you will know if it is okay or not, no one else can answer it for you. For me, it’s in our family’s tradition. It’s in my culture to do it. My mom says in the old days it used to a contest between the bride’s family and the groom’s family–who could give more money. I mean, you have to keep in mind that the wedding is a celebration. And the money that was usually given to the couple during the money dance is meant to start their nest egg, to start their family. I never went to a family wedding that did not have a money dance. So we did one. And I think everyone got a kick out of it. I see all the pictures from the money dance, and everyone looks like they were having a great time:

At the very least, it really gave us some 1-on-1 time with those who wanted it. I mean, when you have almost 400 guests, that’s pretty hard to do!

A reoccurring theme you will see in our money dance pictures is the amount of GUYS in John’s line. John and I have a ridiculous amount of guy friends. We have way more guy friends than girl friends. So if you notice the picture above, that line of guys behind my friend Anh is for JOHN! Not a line for me, a line for JOHN!!!

Exhibit #1. Pretty talented to have 5 guys pinning money on him at once. It’s like a lifelong dream for all of them to dance with a guy, hahaha.

But at least all the guys look like they’re having fun. And despite the majority of our friends being Vietnamese, I didn’t hear any questions or comments about what a money dance was, or why we were having it. Actually, for anyone who read our wedsite, they would’ve already known that we were planning on having a money dance. So maybe all of our guests read that and knew so they didn’t have to ask questions.

Ok ok, enough of John, time for a picture with me dancing. Isn’t that lei of 20s around my neck crazy?!?

And now more guys dancing with John.

The trend really never ended.

Awwww, me and my best friend/MOH. Too bad she wasn’t looking at the professional camera. It’s such a great picture. We look really happy. And you can see John’s sister/BM in the background with a money crown for John.

Awwww, John and his other sister/BM. See the resemblance?

I love this picture because I remember it actually happening. Despite the long line of friends and family, my uncles (the culprits are in the background) sneaked my great-grandmother to the front of the line to dance with me. My great-grandmother is 97 years old, and she doesn’t act a day over 80, hahaha. She was dancing with me, and then proceeded to “show me how to dance.” Like I wasn’t dancing how she wanted me to dance. It was hilarious. We were dancing for actually a long time till someone finally took her away because I still had a long line of people waiting.

Oh, another guy? Business as usual. I told you. His line of guys was ridiculously long. I think all our single friends thought it would be funny to dance with John. At the same time, it’d be a little awkward to dance with me. We’ve all been friends for so long, and you never really imagine slow dancing with your friend’s girl.

My CAL girls. We all went to Hawaii right after graduation, and somehow came home with a “Hawaii pose.” Now, whenever we get together, we have to do THIS exact pose. It was only appropriate to do it for my wedding.

At this point I was just dripping in cash, I didn’t know how to keep it up. My uncle was amused and put this crown with loooooooooooong strands of money going down to the floor. Tip: Having the veil helped! Most people just pinned the veil, instead of attempting to stab me with pins.
Our money dance was really long, so long that our DOC cut it off. We probably could’ve been dancing for days. But we had a good time, and made a good number. Woo hoo for the honeymoon fund!

I love this picture because my law school friend got pretty drunk, and jumped into John’s “groomsmen” picture. So every time he sees this picture he’s like “grrrrrr.” Hahaha, I think it’s funny.

And finally, the dance was over, and it was time to take off the money. Can you see how the strand of dollars goes to the floor and keeps going!?! It was ridiculous. I looked like Money Rambo. But it was worth it.
