The following list are the things I've found helpful, aside from all the necessities like carseat, stroller, etc. Keep in mind that my baby is only two months, so this list is stuff I've found useful from birth till now.
Baby gear
- Cozy cover. This was actually one of the things handed down to me, but I've received so many compliments on it, and it's so unbelievably helpful in cold and windy weather. No need to fumble with covering the car seat with a blanket! It's very nifty.
- Ergobaby with heart2heart infant insert. I know many moms say to forego the infant insert and just use a towel. Unfortunately, I had already bought mine and used it, so I couldn't return it. However, I actually really like the infant insert. I find that it provides a lot of cushion for my newborn, since she's completely surrounded by the insert. Definitely more support than a towel would've provided. And I just love the Ergobaby. It's so comfy and easy to use. Little Cesalie falls asleep so easily when she's in it.
- Regret: I wish I didn't buy the Moby so quickly. It takes a few tries to get the hang of using it, but my main complaint is that I can't go out with it. It's so long that it would drag on the ground and get dirty before I put it on. Plus, when I'm out, I'm a pretty lazy person. I would've much rather preferred just using the Ergobaby, or a carrier like Baby K'tan that's already ready to go.
- Pack n' Play with changing table. I live in a two story home, and having the PnP downstairs, while her bassinet and changing pad are upstairs has been such a blessing. If she falls asleep while downstairs, I have somewhere to put her, and if she needs changing, I don't have to go all the way upstairs to change her. I love it!
- Regret: Swing. My baby was one of those babies who did not like the swing. Luckily, it was a hand me down, so I didn't waste any money purchasing one, but if I did I would've regretted it. I actually received a swing off my registry, but luckily I returned it. It's a pricey item, and I would suggest waiting until you have your baby before purchasing it in case your baby also does not like the swing.
- Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler Rocker. This rocker is significantly cheaper than a swing, and also a lot more mobile than the swing. I was looking for something I could put little C in while brushing my teeth, or chillin in our bedroom since she likes to be on an incline, and this was perfect. I considered getting a bouncer but this one had such great reviews I went with this one.
Infant care
- Cloth diapers to use as burp rags. Don't buy burp rags, they're too small.
- Breast pump. I didn't buy one, I borrowed a relative's and I'm happy I did. I didn't end up pumping really at all. So no money lost for me. However, if I had purchased the pump, it would've been a lot of money wasted. I would wait to see if you pump.
- Lasinoh Breast pads. I tried using Aveda breast pads and they kept moving around in my bra. Poor adhesive. But don't buy too many. I used a lot in the beginning, so I thought I should buy them in huge packs. But I actually only needed them in the beginning, and now I'm left with two boxes of unused breast pads.
- Hooter Hiders. I have two, and they're great. I still use them, and I get complimented on them all the time.
- Breast milk storage bags. See breast pump above.
- My Brest Friend. I think if I had this as soon as I gave birth I would've used it more. I loved it in the beginning, but didn't use it for that long after.
- Bottle drying rack. See breast pump above.
- Bath tub. I bought a huge bath tub since it said that it could be used from newborn to toddler. Well, I didn't actually think that once my baby was big enough, I could just put her in the regular adult tub. She's almost a year now, and we still use the tub, but I think it's more because it's there and not because we have to use it. I should've just kept a smaller cheaper tub.
- Washcloths. I didn't need to buy a single one. I was gifted so many of these.
- Hooded bath towel. Love them. We have at least 7, some are really thick and some are thin. I think it's good for both winter and summer.
- Nail clippers/Grooming kit. I use this all the time. A definite must.
- Thermometer. Also a must. We have the normal thermometer and also a rectal one. No one likes the idea of a rectal thermometer, but it comes in handy, especially if your baby is constipated.
- Humidifier. Surprisingly we've used this a lot. I didn't think we would, but our baby got sick quite a few times in the winter.
- Baby mittens. A definite to prevent scratching.
- Diaper pail. This wasn't a must until we started baby food. The odor was something that definitely needed to be kept under wraps. Even if you take out the trash every day, unless you took it out after every poop, I would just buy a diaper pail.
- Regret: Opened package of lap pads. I've never used them.
- Regret: Buying a sterilizer. Anything bottle related really, since we didn't use bottles.
- Regret: Registering for bibs. I'm currently at 51 bibs. Did not need to buy any fabric ones. Bumkins on the other hand...I love those things, and bought 4 of the 5 I have. Best invention.
- Regret: Buying breast cream. You use the cream sparingly and having a big tube of it was a waste for me. I bought Lasinoh breast cream, and it was just too thick for my liking that I hardly used it.
- Regret: Buying bottles and nipples
- Regret: Dishwasher Caddy.
- Regret: Waited too long to introduce pacifier
- Regret: Wipe warmer
- Regret: Didn't get a monitor
